Miley Cyrus has made many shocking choices over her career. When she married Liam Hemsworth, we all hoped the marriage would last, but to some extent, we expected them to eventually divorce.
However, we didn’t expect that divorce to come so soon. They called it quits only eight months after their wedding. And they didn’t just separate, Hemsworth has already filed the divorce paperwork to make it official. So what caused him to act so fast? We have the answer.

Photos of Cyrus kissing Carter shocked the public after they surfaced just days after Cyrus and Hemsworth announced their split. Carter, who also recently separated from her husband Brody Jenner, posted pictures to Instagram of her and Cyrus vacationing in Lake Como, Italy. The public instantly questioned the nature of Cyrus and Carter’s relationship. Although the first photos showed nothing inappropriate, Cyrus has mentioned in previous interviews that she is still attracted to women.
Later, more photos surfaced which showed Cyrus and Carter kissing. And then to make matter worse, party-goers at a club claimed Cyrus and Carter were all over each other during a night out. According to one source, they were “basically having sex.”
Cyrus claims to still love Hemsworth, but it seems that she was rubbing her new relationship in his face. There’s no way that Cyrus could think Hemsworth, and everyone else she knows, wouldn’t see those photos. She obviously doesn’t care that everyone knows she’s moved on.
What was the final straw for Liam Hemsworth?
When Cyrus and Hemsworth first separated, Hemsworth was hopeful that eventually, they’d be able to work things out. Before the couple tied the knot back in December, they were both adamant that their marriage would be forever. A source spoke with Hollywood Life about Cyrus’ wishes. “She’s adamant that she doesn’t want to get divorced, so she wants to make sure when she eventually gets married it actually means forever.”
At first, Hemsworth saw their separation as temporary. He was still hoping to work things out with Cyrus. But once his family saw the photos of Cyrus and Carter, he knew they didn’t have a chance. Hemsworth quickly filed for divorce because Cyrus was being so open about her relationship with Carter.
According to a source for US Weekly, “He [Hemsworth] thought they could work it out, but all those pictures of her and Kaitlynn ended that. Liam comes from a very conservative family and his family was freaked out by it.”

Because of how quickly Cyrus moved on after the separation, many fans thought her new relationship must have started while she was still married. But Cyrus admittedly denies that. In a long statement on Twitter, she explained her side of the story. The post read in part, “I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100{01de1f41f0433b1b992b12aafb3b1fe281a5c9ee7cd5232385403e933e277ce6} of the time. What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed. I have nothing to hide.”
Cyrus then wrote about how she used to party when she was younger. She listed all the crazy things she had done and said she’s accepted that it’s all on the internet. Then she continued, “But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled, I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here… I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will. BUT at this point, I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time.”
As far as we know, Hemsworth hasn’t responded to the cheating rumors. He’s never accused Cyrus of cheating, but it is clear that he was hurt by how fast she moved on.
